Commitment to Diversity
During my Master's program, I completed the ‘PROF-it’ Professors in Training program. This program consisted of seminars and workshops that I received no formal credit for, but learned invaluable skills about college instruction. Upon completion, I was accepted to the teaching fellow cooperative between University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC), which allowed me to be the instructor of record for the course, Introduction to Sociology. This experience shaped my teaching aspirations, as I realized how much I enjoy working with students who vary greatly in terms of age, race, socioeconomic status, and life experiences. Additionally, during this teaching experience I was confronted with the structural disadvantage that many of the students coming from Baltimore faced in their previous education experiences and current lives. The opportunity at CCBC challenged me to develop a teaching style that accommodates various learning styles, educational and cultural backgrounds. At the University of Kentucky, my time was protected for research but I took every opportunity to further my aspirations to teach. I volunteered for a teaching practicum with my mentor, Dr. Carrie Oser, for her 'Inside-Out' class on drugs and crime which is held in a local prison. This course is unique as it is comprised of half university students, and half currently incarcerated students. Similar to my experience at CCBC, I enjoyed teaching in such a diverse environment and aim to offer such a course in the future.
